These practice-oriented learning activities are designed to enhance the knowledge exchange between cities dealing with similar transport challenges and ultimately improve urban mobility across Europe.

Cities are selected to participate via annual calls for both host and visiting cities.

Cities are invited to apply to host CIVITAS peer-exchange activities. They will have the opportunity to host either work placements and study visits

Host cities benefit from:

• Having the chance to showcase your city’s achievements in the field of sustainable urban mobility;
• Having the opportunity to exchange on a one-to-one basis with peers;
• Being featured on the CIVITAS website and European-wide media outlets through a dedicated article/interview;
• Being offered speaking slots at high-level European events.

CIVITAS will also provide financial and organisational support for hosts.

What is a study visit?

CIVITAS study visits provide the opportunity for a group of up to ten city representatives to travel to another European city facing similar sustainable urban mobility challenges and learn about possible solutions and best practices.

Lasting between two and five days, these study visits are tailored to the needs of the participating cities and utilise an interactive approach. Selected city representatives will benefit from financial support covering travel and accommodation costs.

What is a work placement?

CIVITAS work placements offer transport professionals a hands-on learning experience in another European city. The placements, which run for between two to five days, focus on a concrete topic and respond to a local challenge faced by the visiting city.

The main objective is to transfer practical knowledge and expertise from the host city to help achieve a specific objective. Financial support is available to cover travel and accommodation costs for selected cities.

When will the peer-to-peer activities take place?

CIVITAS work placements and study visits are taking place each year between and. The exact dates of the visits will be decided in cooperation with the host and the visiting cities, with the support of the CIVITAS consortium.

What are the benefits for cities taking part to peer-to-peer activities?

Through their participation in CIVITAS peer-to-peer activities, cities will:

• Gain important European recognition and visibility for their sustainable mobility actions;
• Receive opportunities to share their experience with European experts and European institutions and therefore contribute to shaping EU transport policy;
• Take part in facilitated peer review exchanges with a common methodology;
• Obtain practical guidance and support from the CIVITAS Secretariat;
• Gain direct access to specific expertise and best practices;
• Receive coaching through progress reviews and monitoring;
• Learn recognised methods for networking and building capacity.

Language of the activities

The working language of CIVITAS initiative is English, meaning that all working documents will be provided in English. In order to take part in the exchange activities, an intermediate to advanced level of English is expected.
