| Description of work |
ARCHIMEDES is an integrating project, bringing together 6 European cities to address problems and opportunities for creating environmentally sustainable, safe and energy efficient transport systems in medium sized urban areas.
The objective of ARCHIMEDES is to introduce innovative, integrated and ambitious strategies for clean, energy-efficient, sustainable urban transport to achieve significant impacts in the policy fields of energy, transport, and environmental sustainability. An ambitious blend of policy tools and measures will increase energy-efficiency in transport, provide safer and more convenient travel for all, using a higher share of clean engine technology and fuels, resulting in an enhanced urban environment (including reduced noise and air pollution). Visible and measurable impacts will result from significantly sized measures in specific innovation areas. Demonstrations of innovative transport technologies, policy measures and partnership working, combined with targeted research, will verify the best frameworks, processes and packaging required to successfully transfer the strategies to other cities.
Two learning cities participates fully in the decision making and organisational structure. New member state representation is assured with one Lead City and one Learning City. A strong educational objective will be realised with training and learning actions within the consortium, and via promotion, training events and educational exchanges between students, citizens and stakeholders in the project innovation areas.
Dissemination of results and the focus on exploitation activities will impact well beyond the innovation area itself, providing lessons for citizens, practitioners and policy makers.
The result will be a greater acceptance for new tools, services and technologies and the objectives that lie behind them.
It is now possible to subscribe to the CIVITAS ARCHIMEDES newsletters and local newsletters from the six partner cities, by using the link below:

| Expected Results and Exploitation Plans |
The ARCHIMEDES project contributes towards the specific impacts listed in the CIVITAS work programme, namely:
1) Increased energy-efficiency in urban transport in line with EU policy;
2) Contribute to improving road safety in urban areas;
3) Increased share of bio-fuels and other alternative road transportation fuels in compliance with EU legislation;
4) Reduction of CO2, pollutant emissions and noise in compliance with EU legislation;
5) Contribute to improving efficiency and effectiveness of urban transport and increasing modal share towards sustainable modes.
Education for students, citizens and practitioners within the project’s innovation areas via promotion, training events, and educational exchanges will be a hallmark of the project.
Exploitation activities in ARCHIMEDES will involve facilitating development of strategies for exploiting the results of the project. There are four basic types of organisations involved in the project with different target markets in Europe (including local and national):
- Public authorities (in scheme strategy, design, implementation and funding);
- Education and research (in providing skill levels and knowledge);
- Commercial companies (provision of products, systems and services within schemes);
- Commercial consultants (policy advice, assessment and management of schemes).
Exploitation planning will involve all of these groups working within the framework of the project.
In addition, a particular focus in the ARCHIMEDES project will be opportunities for further exploitation of results within the Consortium itself:
- Knowledge exchange from Lead to Learning Cities (e.g. SUT Planning or Influencing Travel Behaviour); and
- Training sessions and technical seminars for the whole consortium, based on the expertise on different themes from within this large and experienced consortium;
