CIVITAS - MODERN
MODERN = MObility, Development and Energy use ReductioN - this is our name, this is our motto.
The 4 cities of Craiova Brescia Coimbra and Vitoria-Gasteiz are determined to ensure political commitment, encourage stakeholder engagement and pursue performance orientation to substantially improve the quality of life for their communities as a whole
Description of work
The cities of Brescia, Coimbra and Vitoria-Gasteiz are coordinated by Craiova in Romania and will develop a bold package of integrated measures promoting overall 49 different measures spreading over the 8 thematic areas. Along with promoting sustainable mobility measures the MODERN project aims to promoting a wide communication and interaction among the cities at the level of political decision makers and important stakeholders, as well as encouraging a strong cooperation among scientists and technicians of the European team to circulate experiences and best practice.

The project shows ambitious goals which will have a substantial impact on the state of the mobility in the cities and a good visibility at the European level, mixing measures with large scale application actions based in existing and commercially available technologies, and measures with more advanced trials and methodologies.
The measures of the project outline a good balance between large scale application actions based in existing and commercially available technologies, like in renewal of public transport fleet with clean vehicles, in technological systems for traffic management and infomobility, in promotional campaigns, in access restrictions and interchange systems, with more advanced trials and methodologies, like energy saving, in alternative fuels, in freight distribution. The first type of actions will be the backbone of the project with a massive impact on the state of the cities, while the second one will contribute to enlarge knowledge, to increase the qualitative level of mobility tools and to throw the basis for future develpments. The overall strategy of the working plan has been designed to facilitate as much as possible the interactions, the exchange of experiences and the cross-fertilisation among the different sites

The MODERN partner cities have already expressed in the past a big effort in mobility government and have elaborated strategies to improve the efficiency and the sustainability of their overall mobility system.
Today, within the MODERN project, the cities intend to strengthen their effort with ever growing political commitment, stakeholder engagement and overall orientation to performance which will lead to substantial improvements in the quality of life for their communities as a whole.

Expected Results and Exploitation Plans
The MODERN partners share the general objectives; to substantially improve the quality of mobility and environment in their cities and to develop and implement integrated set of interventions operating on different issues and themes. The MODERN project will lead to significant steps forward on the way of a cleaner and better mobility in the cities partners. Apart from the detailed the description of the expected results in each city, outlined in the former section of the proposal, we can outline the most important expected progresses. It's important to underline that they represent common results expected by the different cities partners, which, even in their different realities and local approach, share a common understanding of the problems of mobility and a similar set of measures that will be implemented with the project.

  • A radical increment of the use of bio-fuel for public transport fleet
  • The diffusion of the use of CNG not only for public buses and fleets by private cars too
  • A better quality of P.T. fleet, with the acquisition new alternative fuelled buses
  • Fuel and energy saving through education of drivers and technological solutions
  • A decreasing of the private cars circulating in the urban areas
  • A safer urban environment with a lower number of accidents and safer conditions for walkers travellers
  • A better use of urban spaces, with a lower pressure by cars and spaces recovered for a proper use

The MODERN project intends to increase the quality and the effectiveness of the public transport system (from the environmental and from the service point of view) increasing the number of users, also through a series of side-measure capable of limiting the circulation of private cars. To limit the waste of energy and to support the diffusion of the use of clean fuels among the citizens. To give value at alternative “sweet” mobility modes (bicycle at first) improving safety and liveability for their users. To increase the technological endowment of the cities as a support to more intelligent mobility management policies and as a service to citizens. To strongly operate to diffuse as much as possible the culture of an environmental sustainable mobility among citizens and to increase the social awareness of the vital importance of these themes. The MODERN partners strongly believe that the efforts put in deploying the different measures will lead to significant steps forward on the way of a cleaner and better mobility in the cities partners.
