Objectives / Innovative Aspects
The key objectives of the City-Logistics (CL) project in Bremen was to reduce the emissions and to improve the overall efficiency of goods delivery in Bremen.
|
The Measure
The first planning of the City Logistics project in the Freight Village (FV / Güterverkehrszentrum GVZ) Bremen started in 1991. The second step of the City Logistics development in Bremen started with the establishment of the GVZ City-Logistik Bremen GmbH in June 1994.
Within the Vivaldi project, an update of City Logistics (CL) was planned with:
• Application of economic friendly CNG-trucks (7.5 - 12.0 ton gross weight)
• Extension of bundled trasnport into the city centre of Bremen and into the hinterland
• Development and application of telematics solutions for the optimisation of logistic process flows

Implementation Status
Despite all efforts, it was not possible within the project period to purchase any CNG-truck of size 7.5to . 12.0to gross weight as there was no real offer by the motor-industry.
Nevertheless City logistics bought a bio-diesel truck - also to assess the economic and ecological impacts and to test the new online telematics systems.
In general, since 2000/2001 a strong increase of courier-, express and parcel services can be stated - as well as more efficient logistics concepts within the German retail sector.
As a result, economic groupage-transports into the city centre of Bremen of City Logistics could not be increased but only stabilised. Against this background, groupage-transports into the hinterland of Bremen were successfully strengthened.
The telematics applications were developed.

Results
Within the project period, units for customers (forwarders) were consolidated every day in the Freight Village (GVZ) Bremen and transported to target areas (i.e. Shopping Centre, central warehouse).
A truck mileage reduction of about 9,000 kilometres monthly was achieved by City Logistics. This correlates to
70 day-tours of trucks of the size range 7.5 t. All in all about 1,100 litres of diesel fuel were saved every month by
the groupage-actions. Thus a verifiable reduction of emissions can be achieved.
