Mobilpunkt in Bremen
“Mobilpunkt”: Interchanges between Car-Sharing, Public Transport and cycling
Public street space is dedicated to Car-Sharing in the so-called "Mobilpunkt" - a label for integration of modern, integrated sustainable transport modes.
The success story goes on in Bremen, where in 2010 there are more than 5000 Car-Sharing users sharing 130(+) cars at a growth of 20% annually.
Objectives / Innovative Aspects
Modern parking-management for inner-city neighbourhoods requires innovative solutions.
Space is usually very limited - and is also required for greening, for bike-parking and for widening sidewalks.
The modern service of Car-Sharing has proofed to reduce parking needs - but Car-Sharing stations may require public street space.
The Measure
To test the function of on-street Car-Sharing stations as part of a rather holistic
promotion of alternative modes, two special integrated intermodal Car-Sharing stations were implemented in Bremen - and designed with the special brand name ‘mobilpunkt’. They are located in inner-city areas with intensive parking problems.

Implementation Status
There are about 435 users of the Car-Sharing service in a radius of 500 meters around the two stations. 189 answers were received:
  • There are predominantly private users (83 %); but surprisingly enough 17 % corporate customers
  • 76 % have no car in the household or company
  • 30% of the private customers have replaced a private car, 55% have not purchased a car due the service of Car-Sharing
  • 21% of the corporate customers have replaced a company car, 67% have not purchased a car due the service of Car-Sharing
  • The nearness of the Car-Sharing service is named as a key factor for being very attractive
In total, more than 90 cars have been replaced in the adjacent area around the ‚mobilpunkt’-stations, which relieves the parking situation.
