CIVITAS VANGUARD
Low Carbon Bus Trial
To demonstrate the feasibility of hybrid diesel-electric double deck bus operation in the City of Bath.
Objectives / Innovative Aspects
To demonstrate the feasibility of hybrid diesel-electric double deck bus operation in the City of Bath. To identify a vehicle which has the same overall reliability and cost of operation as a conventional diesel bus, but with improved emission standards (including carbon) and reduced noise levels and fuel use.

All public transport vehicles in the area are currently diesel powered. Diesel-electric hybrid technology is innovative within the UK.

The Measure
To identify a suitable hybrid diesel-electric double deck bus which will be demonstrated for a period of six months on the Bath Park & Ride services. During the trial the hybrid bus will be compared with conventional diesel buses operating on the same routes to test emissions, noise levels, reliability, running costs and fuel use

The diesel-electric hybrid double deck bus should have the ability to operate with zero emissions over short sections in the environmentally sensitive World Heritage Site city centre.

All public transport vehicles in the area are currently diesel powered. Diesel-electric hybrid vehicles which have the ability to operate under electric power only, with zero emissions over short sections of route are innovative within the UK.

Related Measures
Implementation Status
First Group have secured a Wrights diesel-electric hybrid double deck bus, which has the ability to operate over short sections of route in the city centre only on electric power. They are planning to commence a six month trial on the city’s park and ride services in August 2010.
(Expected) Results
1) To reduce overall fuel consumption (and carbon emissions) over a conventional diesel bus on the same operating duty cycle by 30%.

2) To reduce noxious emissions (NOx, CO) by at least 30% over a conventional bus on the same operating cycle due to optimised engine operation.

3) To reduce noise emissions overall over a conventional diesel bus (although with local variation).

4) To achieve similar or lower overall operating costs to a conventional diesel bus on the same operating duty cycle.
