| Brescia is a city in the northern Italy, situated at the foot of the Alps, with a population of 190,000. It is the administrative capital of the Province of Brescia, counting 1,200,000 inhabitants. The province is a great industrial area, concentrating on mechanical, automotive and machine tools production. |
|
Brescia is located in the Lombardy region, 149 meters on sea level. It is the second city of Lombardy, for inhabitants and economical importance.
The ancient city center, partially destroyed during second World War, preserves the original roman urban structure and several important buildings: Duomo Vecchio (sec. XI-XII), Duomo Nuovo (sec. XVII), la Loggia, il Broletto (partially rebuilt). The urbanistic structure of Brescia still shows its Roman origins, through its regular installation of “Castrum,” and its two main squares, as well as two adjoining and connected centres: Piazza della Vittoria (the modern centre of the City, projected by Marcello Piacentini in 1932) and Piazza della Loggia.
The city is crossed from the A4, which connects to Turin, Bergamo, Milan, Verona, Venice and Trieste, and is the end point of the highway A21, which connects to Cremona, Piacenza and Torino again. Brescia is served by four toll motorway. The city has a public transportation system made of 18 lines serving 14 hinterland municipalities for a catchment area of 360,000 inhabitants. The city is crossed by the railway line Milan - Venice and the train station of Brescia is calling for the head of the lines to Cremona, Parma, and Edolo Iseo, Bergamo and Lecco. 15 Km from the center of town is the airport of Brescia-Montichiari, inaugurated on 25 October 1999.
The city is placed between Milan and Venice in a profitable location, at the border of a rich plain area. In the last fifty years, Brescia had a great industrial and commercial development, leaded by siderurgic, mechanical, textiles and food. The number of companies active in the province of Brescia, most of whom work in the urban area, is 90,000. As in the rest of Italy many companies are small to medium sized family run.
With CIVITAS MODERN, Brescia is working to meet important challenges head on, such as the reduction of the congestion in the urban area and the related pollution levels. |
