Craiova,capital of Oltenia Region, is situated in the south west of Romania. It has 320,000 inhabitants and is an historic, commercial and cultural centre.
Located 200 km from Bucharest, Craiova is one of the oldest cities from Romania; its foundation dating back to the 400 - 350 B.C. It was first mentioned in the Tabula Peutingeriana, a map of the Roman Empire made at the request of the Roman emperor Caracalla, dating probably from 225. Through the ages, Craiova became an important market town on the basis of its geographical position and later assumed administrative responsibilities.
The current general plan for the development of Craiova contains ambitious projects regarding street enlargement, upgrading of the infrastructure and transport system.
Craiova is an important railway junction and logistics centre. Craiova Public Transport Company is the main public transport operator in the whole Oltenia region. Service is provided by trams, buses and micro-buses; the public transport fleet of municipality has 250 vehicles and carries 65 million of passengers per year.
Like other urban centres, air and noise pollution are getting worse year by year. Urban traffic is responsible for 40% of CO2 emissions and 70% of emissions of other pollutants arising from road transport.
Public transport in Craiova is constantly changing and developing in line with European policy toward a cleaner and better mobility system.
After Romania's accession to the European Union, Craiova recorded rapid economic growth, which meant an inevitable increase in motorisation. Craiova City Administration is aware of the need to find a mobility solution that replaces older vehicles with newer models. The need to reduce transportation time, reducing fuel consumption, the need for increased mobility, must be accompanied by a balanced plan to increase the share of public transport in the urban transport system. The municipality has also planned other parallel actions leading to increase the urban mobility.
CIVITAS - MODERN represents strong support for the implementation of the European mobility policies and will help Craiova in the development of its strategy for a clean integrated urban transport. Through this project Craiova will join to the great family of CIVITAS cities and will reach a modern and sustainable transport. |
