Debrecen is the second largest city in Hungary with a population of 207 000. The city is the seat of Hajdú-Bihar county and the centre of the North Plain Region. Its place in the economic, educational, commercial, cultural and medical network is of great importance, recognised even outside the borders of the country. Debrecen University is one of the most popular universities in Hungary educating foreign students as well.
The area of the city is 461 km˛. The density of population is 442 people in a sqare kilometer. The urban structure of the City is centralised. Many historical buildings - reflecting the important role of the City in the history – draws up the city centre, which was reconstructed recently.
The city is situated 220 kilometers from Budapest. It lies at the largest railway and road junction in the eastern part of the Great Plain.
The Debrecen–Hajdúszoboszló–Hortobágy triangle is one of the most popular tourist locations in Hungary. Consequently, most of the commercial lodgings in Hajdú-Bihar County are located in this area. Debrecen offers quality services for health tourism (spa bath), conference and business tourism, as well as for incentive tourism. The Debrecen flower carnival is one of the biggest tourist events in Hungary.
The Debrecen airport – former soviet military base – has international status since 2001. It has passengers and cargo facilities. In the near future a new terminal and instrumental landing system will be installed.
Debrecen has all forms of medical services. There are 500 hospital beds, the number of physicians per 10.000 inhabitants is 73. The city has been known as an educational center for centuries. The University of Debrecen has 24.000 students, 10 faculties and 4 institutes, the number of researchers and teachers exceeds 1500. |
