| Bath is a city in the South West of England with a population of about 80,000, situated 159km west of London. Designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the city is the principal centre of the Bath and North East Somerset authority, which boasts a population of 170,000. |

Bath was founded in the valley of the River Avon, around the only naturally occurring hot springs in the United Kingdom, by the Romans around AD63. Edgar was crowned king of England at Bath Abbey in 973 and Bath was granted city status by Queen Elizabeth I in 1590. The City became popular as a spa resort during the Georgian era (18th century), which led to a major expansion that left a heritage of exemplary Georgian architecture crafted from Bath stone. The city became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
Bath has a variety of theatres, museums, and other cultural and sporting venues, which have helped to make it a major centre for tourism. Over one million overnight visitors and 3.8 million day visitors come to the city each year. The city has two universities and several schools and colleges.
There is a large service sector and growing information and communication technologies and creative industries, providing employment for the population of Bath and the surrounding area.
Within the RENAISSANCE project Bath will introduce a number of innovations that will will improve both the technical and behavioural aspects of the city. A bike sharing scheme that will include conventional and powered bikes will be introduced to allow residents and visitors to reach virtually every part of this hilly city.
The car sharing scheme will double the number of vehicles and locations to expand their service with greener cars whereas public transport will exploit greener vehicles and waiting passengers will receive real time and more accurate infomation about next buses arrival.
Residents and visitors will be also better informed about the way of travelling the city thanks to a brand-new wayfinding system that will be designed and installed during the project lifecycle. Besides new solutions to the public realm will be introduced to make the city centre safer and more secure.
With regards to freight, there will be different solutions to reduce the number of HGVs entering the city centre and to optimise freight transport and delivery.
All the measures concerning RENAISSANCE in Bath will be addressed to the improvement of the quality of life as well as the air quality that will make this city an even better place to live and visit. |
