| With a population of 630.000 inhabitants, Genoa, called La Superba (The Proud), is the capital of Liguria Region, situated in the North West of Italy.
The town, characterised by one of the largest historical centres in Europe, designated as World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO since July 2006, is the core of the Italian Riviera. |
|
Genoa was European Culture Capital in 2004. Its port is the most important of Italy for traffic flows and the third one in the Mediterranean Sea.
The town is spread between sea and mountains with a comparatively long and narrow coastline stretching from east to west. The urban environment, defined by the topography of the area, shows development mainly in the coastal area sloping down towards the sea. Genoa has a very difficult street layout due to the lack of space and the absence of alternative routes.
The urban core area is only 28 square kilometres in which live 284.287 inhabitants (10.153 inhabitants for square kilometres).
The measures developed within CiViTAS CARAVEL project are mainly focused in the central and the eastern part of the city, with particular attention to the old historical town and the city centre, the area of the main Hospital and pf the International Fair.
In the central Genoa (including the old historical centre) the problem of the non-sustainable number of circulating (and pollutant) private cars are faced with a mix of measures regarding both access restrictions and new forms of mobility for people and freights.
Genoa is active in all the CIVITAS policy fields and the measures foreseen by the project are spread all over the target area, harmonizing them into the different urban realities.
Genoa is CiViTAS Thematic Leader in the field of Flexible “on demand” Transport systems since September 2006. |
