| Born out of the Loire and the nearby Atlantic, the Nantes Conurbation, with its 24 municipalities and 550,000 inhabitants, is the largest urban centre in western France. In the last 10 years, it has seen the second highest rate of growth in France. |
|
The conurbation covers an area of 52,000 hectares, half of which is unspoilt or agricultural land irrigated by 150 km of rivers.
Today, the Urban Council of Nantes operates as a metropolitan area in collaboration with the Saint-Nazaire Conurbation (109,000 inhabitants) and the Guérande Peninsula (65,000 inhabitants). The Nantes-Saint-Nazaire metropolitan zone is organised into an interdependent geographical area combining strong economic assets with a quality of life based on a balance between the natural and urban environment.
For the last ten years, despite its demographic expansion and the two million individual journeys recorded every day, the Urban Council of Nantes has operated a voluntary policy for urban development and the environment. Thanks in particular to the development of its public transport system (83 million journeys every year, 36 kilometres of tramway), it has witnessed a significant reduction in the use of the private car for journeys. |
