| Potenza, situated in the southern part of Italy, is the chief town of the Province and of the Basilicata region. The Municipality covers an area of more than 170 square kms with a population of about 70.000 people, increasing to 110.000 if surrounding districts are included. |
|
The historical centre of Potenza is situated 820 metres above the sea level, on a mountain range adjacent to the Basento river.
The town concentrates the most important services and functions, so it attracts everyday many people coming from different areas.
Behind the external appearance of a modern city, given by the several skyscrapers throughout the municipal territory, an ancient heart is healed. It is the track of its medieval history and signs, still preserved despite the several earthquakes which occurred through the centuries.
Potenza is now undergoing a considerable process of renewal and increasing commercial activities. This is particularly so in terms of developing industry and modernising in the sectors of food, metal, plastic, electronics and clothing production. At the same time the Potenza authorities are paying close attention to sustainable development with particular attention being paid to transport. The ambitious local policy goal is to realise the vision of a vital and attractive city with a sustainable, safe and flexible traffic system that enables citizens to have an active lifestyle independent of private car ownership and use. The city has one of the largest pedestrian mobility support systems within the EU. Elevators and escalators lead to the historical centre and are linked to a car park interchange close to the main access points for the town. Public transport is being overhauled and an integrated scheme under development at regional level will enable people to easier reach the city via public transport. Within the CIVITAS framework a Mobility Centre will be set up to co-ordinate the activities linked to sustainable mobility and increase awareness and participation amongst citizens and visitors.
